The procedure a surgery (approx 4 hours) in which a small chip, consisting of a flat electrode is implanted directly onto the choclear nuclei in brain stem. This chip delivers impulses directly to the brain center and converts sound waves into bio electric current.

The outer speech processor is placed externally after two months of surgery. Its role is to receive sound, digitize it and transfer it to the chip.

The chip acts as a transducer and converts sound waves into bio-electric current, which in turn is received by the choclear nuclei.

A team of neurosurgeons, ENT specialists and anaesthetists from the Dr B L Kapur hospital has conducted over 6 such implants. According to Dr J M Hans, Chairman of the center for ENT & Choclear Implant at the hospital, the success depends a lot on the post operative audio-verbal therapy and the child's IQ.

This is a new hope for cases where a choclear implant is not possible or the choclea is non existent or in cases where the auditory nerve and the choclea have been damaged.
