Robotic cataract surgery, a new technology, which uses laser machines to operate on cataract patients is being acquired by a select few hospitals to make the whole process faster and hassle free.
In this surgery, a femto-second laser machine is docked on to the eye and images of the eye are captured by an imaging system attached to it. The major three steps i.e incision of the cornea, opening of the lens capsule and fragmentation of the lens is done robotically. The highlight is, that the complete process takes less than five minutes.

However the flip side is that the surgery will get costlier. As against the traditional cataract operation using the ultrasound rays that costs approximately Rs 40,000 per eye, the laser surgery shall cost as much as Rs 100,000 (one lakh) approximately.

Various hospitals such as Eye 7 are in the process of acquiring this facility. One of the advantages being sighted by the surgeons is that capsular opening of the ctaract is geometrically round, central and precise, which is not possible in all manual cases.
