Stevia leaves used as natural sweetenersSTEVIA HAILED AS THE NEW NATURAL SWEETENER FOR USE BY DIABETICS

Stevia, a plant belonging to South American flora family has been recently hailed as helping to control sugar levels in type 2 diabetics. Stevia leaves contain stevioside, which is 300 times sweeter than sugar.

As per a study conducted by Rajasthan University’s botany department, this plant can be grown in congenial climatic conditions in your backyard or kitchen garden.  The World Health Organization has also done an exhaustive study on Stevia plant's pharmacological effects in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It is also approved as safe, natural and no calorie sweetener.

The plant has been used as a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners traditionally in countries like Brazil and Paraguay. It is not only a natural calorie-free product but also has other advantages over the currently used chemically produced artificial sweeteners such as saccharine, aspartame and cyclamate.

Besides, it is considered hypoglycemic, diuretic and cardio tonic. Its leaf is used for diabetes, obesity, hypertension, fatigue, depression, sweet cravings and infections. Its  consumption is considered beneficial in regulating blood sugar levels and bringing them into normal range. It is also used as digestive aid, as a skin care product and has been used to clear blemishes, tighten skin to remove wrinkles, to heal mouth sores and to treat a variety of wounds. It has also been used to treat eczema, seborrhea and dermatitis, the research papers say.

It has been approved for use in food by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India), as in soft drink concentrates, carbonated water, chewing gum, etc.
