Qualification:
Dr. Prochi F. Madon, M.Sc, Ph.D., has been in the field of Medical Genetics for over 3 decades. Her speciality is human cytogenetics, which deals with chromosome disorders detected by Karyotyping and FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization). She developed the Genetics and PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) laboratory in the Dept. of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics at Jaslok Hospital in 1999. She gives Genetic Counseling to families with a history of various genetic disorders.
Dr. Madon was one of the first to introduce FISH in India as a rapid and reliable diagnostic test on a variety of samples for disorders ranging from infertility to cancer. She represented Asia on the International committee of ISCN. Earlier, she was a recipient of the Lady Tata Memorial Trust Scholarship and was given the Young Scientist award by the Indian Society of Human Genetics. She has been invited to speak at national and international conferences in her field and has several publications.
She has been a part of the IVF and Genetics team of Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, which pioneered PGD by FISH in India. This state-of-the-art technique is a boon to couples with repeated miscarriages where the problem is due to a translocation or inversion in one of the partners. The first babies born in India after PGD by FISH for Robertsonian/ reciprocal translocations and inversions have been reported from Jaslok Hospital.
