Signs of kidney infection

TOP 14 INDICATORS OF KIDNEY INJURY

Kidney infection, also known as renal infection or pyelonephritis, is a very common Urinary tract infection (UTI) that is usually caused by E. coli bacteria. There could be various other types of kidney ailments that one should be aware of like calculus/stone formation in urinary tract, cysts, tumors,etc..

Besides illnesses like malaria, dengue, enteric fever, viral infections, etc, that may lead to acute kidney injury,  India is also reporting an increased incidence of Acquired Kidney Injury (AKI) due to little known  scrub typhus. This is caused by the micro-organism rickettsia and transmitted to humans by mites which is endemic in Asia with an estimated one million cases occurring annually.

It is highly under-diagnosed and under-reported cause of hospitalization in India. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified scrub typhus as a re-emerging disease in South-East Asia and the South-Western pacific region with a case fatality rate of up to 30 per cent in untreated cases.

Many of the cases remain undiagnosed and therefore are not treated resulting in high mortality. Importantly, if identified in time, it can be treated easily with cheap medicines that can be given orally.

There is increased need to include testing for this condition in patients with acute febrile illness.

The most common kinds of kidney infection can be easily treated by administering antibiotics in time.

Symptoms that may indicate kidney injury and should be evaluated are :

Increased frequency, problem in urinating, dark colored urine

2.Pain during passing of urine

3.Blood in the urine
