ABOUT THE DISEASE
Hypoglycemia, also called low blood glucose or low blood sugar, occurs when blood glucose drops below normal levels. Hypoglycemia is commonly associated with the treatment of diabetes. Other reasons include starvation, excessive alcohol consumption, liver illnesses like hepatitis, some hormone deficiencies, insulinoma, etc.
SYMPTOMS
- • hunger
- • shakiness
- • nervousness
- • sweating
- • dizziness or light-headedness
- • sleepiness
- • confusion
- • difficulty speaking
- • anxiety
- • weakness
CAUSES
- as a side effect of Diabetes Medications
- small /delayed meals or starvation
- increased physical activity
- alcoholic beverages
- medical illnesses like insulinoma, hepatitis, etc.
DIAGNOSIS
- Clinical Evaluation
- Documentation of low blood glucose when the signs and symptoms occur
- Disappearance of the signs and symptoms on ingestion of glucose
TREATMENT METHODS
Treatment of hypoglycemia involves:
• Immediate initial treatment to raise blood sugar level, as by consuming glucose tablet/biscuit, fruit juice, sweets, etc.
• Treatment of the underlying condition that`s causing hypoglycemia to prevent it from recurring.
