Active intervention is required to control high blood pressure, whatever the grade. Lifestyle plays an important role here. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication.
Some of the steps you may take are:
· Lose extra weight
· Exercise regularly
· Take healthy diet which is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain, lot of fibre and low in fats.
· Reduce sodium intake - Daily requirement for a normal healthy adult is 1500-2400 mg of Sodium. In case of hypertension, keep it below 1500 mg. Avoid or reduce eating foodstuffs with higher salt content like processed foods, pickles, papad, etc. Shed the habit of adding table salt to your food.
· Limit your alcohol intake- In small amounts, it may reduce the blood pressure but if it is more than two drinks (one drink equals approx. 355 ml beer, 150 ml wine) for men , the protective effect is lost and even the effectiveness of blood pressure medications is reduced. But this is not an excuse to start drinking if you normally don’t drink.
· Avoid tobacco products and smoking
· Reduce caffeine intake
· Reduce your tensions, anxiety and stress
· Regularly monitor your blood pressure and don’t miss the follow up visits to the doctor
· Try to remain happy, indulge in your hobbies, be in touch with your family and friends
