The anti-obesity drug, Sibutramine, which acts as an appetite suppressant, and used widely for slimming purposes has now been banned in countries like Australia, USA, Canada, Europe, etc. After major cardio-vascular side effects like heart attack, stroke and even death being reported  and following  withdrawl of this drug from the market in major countries, India’s apex drug regulator, the Drugs Controller General of India has initiated an independent assessment of  the safety profile of Sibutramine in Indian population. Ban would be brought into effect if recommended by the technical committee. DGCI has recently banned another anti-obesity drug Rimonabant, which had major psychiatric side effects including suicidal ideation.
Sibutramine has been available in India since 1999 and is marketed under various  brand names like Meridia, Obestat, Sibutrex, Sibutrim, etc. With people looking for a quick solution to their obesity problem, there is a huge market for anti-obesity drugs in India. Major side effects have been reported in patients taking herbal slimming pills with unknown formulations.

Healthy diet and regular exercise is the key to weight control. There are lot more drugs under trial and would be known with time. Orlistat is still available and is to be used only under prescription.
