ABOUT VASECTOMY:
Vasectomy is a method of permanent birth control where the tubes carrying the sperm are blocked thus preventing its passage into the semen. Under local anaesthesia, a small incision is made over the scrotal skin after localizing the sperm carrying tube or vas deferens. Through special instrument, opening is stretched; vas is lifted, cut and tied. Cautery may be used to seal the cut ends. The vas is then returned to the scrotum and no stitches are needed to close the incision. Testes continue to make sperm even after vasectomy but the sperms die, disintegrate and are finally absorbed by the body. No Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique is being widely followed these days where only a small puncture is made in the skin. Compared to female sterilization, it is simpler, more effective, chances of complication are less and is more economical. The procedure is done in an outpatient department, takes approximately 20 minutes and is performed by a Urologist or a General surgeon.
