ABOUT PERITONEAL DIALYSIS:
Dialysis is done to replace the kidney functions in patients of kidney failure. In this method, dialysis is performed using the peritoneal membrane as the filtering membrane. A catheter is placed to carry the dialysate solution in and out of the abdominal cavity. The dialysate remains in the abdomen for 2-6 hours, impurities from blood filter into it through the peritoneal membrane. This fluid is then drained through the catheter and replaced with a fresh fluid. The number of sessions required per week would depend on the clinical condition of the patient. It is carried out under supervision of a Nephrologist in hospital or at home. It can be performed as CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) or CCPD (Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis).
