ABOUT PERCUTANEOUS NEPHROLITHOTOMY (PCNL):
This procedure is done under general or spinal anaesthesia to remove the stones from kidney. Using ultrasound guidance, a guide wire is passed through a needle upto the kidney. The stone is fragmented through ultrasonic or laser beam and then removed through the minor holes made in the kidney. It is commonly used for stones greater than 1.5cm in size. A special tube/stent is often placed from kidney to bladder for a few days and then removed later. This procedure is done by a Urologist.
