ABOUT ANEURYSM CORRECTION SURGERY:
Also known as :Aneurysm repair, Aneurysm surgery
Abnormal ballooning or widening of a portion of a blood vessel is termed as Aneurysm. It may occur anywhere in the body, commonly seen in Aorta or Brain vessels. Surgery involves removing the dilated portion of the vessel and replacing it with a graft, or tube of synthetic material, that won`t rupture or tear. In patients who cannot undergo major surgery, a device called a ‘stent graft’ is placed inside the diseased portion of the vessel without removing it. The stent is placed through a catheter passed through an artery. As an alternative to open surgery, specially in cases of cerebral/brain aneurysm, endovascular embolization may be done, where small plastic particles, metal coils, foam, or a balloon may be passed through a catheter to seal off the diseased blood vessel. Depending on the area, the procedure may be performed by a Vascular surgeon, Neurosurgeon or a Cardiothoracic surgeon.
