Following amputation, prosthesis may be needed to make the part functional. It is an artificial device to replace the missing body part. The type of prosthesis depends on the location and length of residual limb/stump and the lifestyle needs. Different types of material are used for making a prosthesis,as silicone, wood, plastic, carbon fibre, etc. in varying combinations. Usually, three months after the area has completely healed from surgery and all swelling has subsided, prosthesis can be applied. They are custom made to fit any individual’s needs. Some patients may decide not to use a prosthesis. It is provided by the doctors in the Rehabilitation department.
