ABOUT THE DISEASE

Dacryocystitis is an infection of the tear (lacrimal) sac that usually occurs because of obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. The obstruction may be due to trauma, infection, inflammation, neoplasm, or mechanical obstruction. It may be acute or chronic in nature and may be congenital in few cases.

SYMPTOMS

• • Pain, redness and swelling of the lower eyelid at the inner corner of the eye
• • Excessive tearing
• • Pus or discharge from the eye
• • Fever

CAUSES

Obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct leads to this infection in majority of the cases, which may be idiopathic or secondary in nature.

DIAGNOSIS

- Clinical evaluation
- Dacryocystography and dacryoscintigraphy
- Dye disappearance test

TREATMENT METHODS

- Heat application

- Abscess drainage

- Systemic antibiotics

- DCR (dacryocystorhinostomy)
