ABOUT THE DISEASE
Atrial myxoma is a noncancerous tumor that develops in the upper chambers of the heart, more common in the left atrium. It generally grows on the wall that separates the two sides of the heart, called the atrial septum.
SYMPTOMS
- • Difficulty in breathing
- • Chest pain
- • Dizziness
- • Fainting
- • Palpitations
- • Shortness of breath
CAUSES
Myxoma is a primary cardiac tumor. These tumors occur in the wall that divides the two upper chambers of the heart. Myxomas mostly occurs in women. They may be hereditary in some patients, termed as familial myxoma.
DIAGNOSIS
- Physical examination
- Computed Tomography (CT) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Doppler study
- Echocardiogram
TREATMENT METHODS
The removal of these tumors requires open heart surgery, but it can be done robotically or through minimally invasive technique. In few cases mitral valve replacement is also required.
