ABOUT THE DISEASE
Glossitis refers to soreness or inflammation of the tongue because of which it swells in size. It can also lead to changes in the tongue`s texture and color. The condition causes the small projections (papillae) on the surface to shrink, creating a shiny, red surface.
SYMPTOMS
- • Swelling in the tongue
- • Pain or tenderness in the tongue
- • Inability to eat, swallow or speak
- • Change in the color of tongue
- • Disappearance of papillae
CAUSES
• Vit-B deficiency
• Mouth trauma
• Low iron levels
• Anemia
• Infections
• Dry mouth
DIAGNOSIS
- Physical examination of mouth conducted by a dentist or medical practitioner.
- Samples of saliva and blood may be taken and sent to a laboratory for further examination.
TREATMENT METHODS
• Antibiotics and other medications are given to treat infections caused by the bacteria or fungi present in mouth or body.
• Pain drugs may also be prescribed to relieve pain until condition is fully treated.
