About Osteoarthritis
ABOUT THE DISEASE
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder. It results as part of the aging process and due to wear and tear. The cartilage in the joint area which allows bones to smoothly glide over each other gets damaged resulting in joint pain, stiffness, swelling, tenderness, decreased range of movement, etc which vary in severity in different individuals.
The symptoms usually start appearing in middle age. It may affect any joint but is most commonly seen in knees, hips, neck, lower back, etc. Factors that can be considered as risk factors include old age, obesity, sedentary life style, joint injury, congenital defect in bone or cartilage, hormonal disorders, etc. It is considered to be a progressive disease which worsens with time. Treatment would help to slow down the progression, as well as, relieve pain and improve joint movement.
Besides physical examination, the tests required include :
- Blood, Urine, Joint fluid examination.
- Imaging- X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound.
