Brain tumors can be benign (non cancerous) or malignant in nature. Depending on the type, size, location of tumor, different types of procedures may be done.
PROCEDURE
Under general anaesthesia, an opening is made in the skull termed as Craniotomy. The tumor is removed through this opening, may be complete removal /partial removal /debulking. Shunt placement is done if required.
Depending on the type and location of tumor, different techniques may be used, as:
Stereotactic surgery-Three dimensional image is created with the help of computers to provide precise information about the location of a tumor and its relation to the surrounding structures in the brain. It is used to perform biopsies, remove tumors, implant radiation pellets or other local treatments, and also helps in reaching deep seated tumors, such as in the brain stem or thalamus. Stereotaxy is performed either with or without a head frame.
Endoscopic surgery- A transsphenoidal endonasal endoscopic approach may be used for some tumors, eg.Pituitary adenomas, Craniopharyngiomas.
Some tumors may also be treated through Gamma knife or Cyber knife surgery.
DURATION
It takes approx 2-4 hours, maybe more in some cases. Hospital stay is of 7-10 days.
RECOVERY
Depends on the type of procedure, location and type of tumor, patient’s age and overall health. It requires a minimum period of rest of 2-3 weeks.
