ABOUT LASER TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS:

This is a new method of treating varicose veins without surgery. The dilated and tortuous veins are heated by a laser. The heat kills the walls of the veins and the body then naturally absorbs the dead tissue and the abnormal veins are destroyed.

PROCEDURE

The operation can be done under general or local anaesthetic.

It is done under ultrasound visualization of the vein.

A fine tube (catheter) is passed through the skin near the knee and then threaded up the diseased long saphenous vein. The catheter is attached to a laser that heats the end of the catheter. The heat seals the walls of the vein so that no blood can flow through it. The successfully closed vein will eventually be absorbed by the body and the blood is automatically routed to other veins.

DURATION

The treatment takes about 45 minutes to an hour per leg. It is commonly done on an outpatient procedure basis.

RECOVERY

Following treatment, it is advised to wear a firm compression stocking on the leg for 1 week.

Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure, and may resume normal activity within a week. Vigorous exercise is to be avoided for the first few days.

The procedure leaves no visible scarring; there is minimal postoperative pain, and a quick recovery period gains immediate relief from symptoms.
