Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which a woman has an imbalance of a female sex hormones. This may lead to menstrual cycle changes, cysts in the ovaries, trouble getting pregnant, and other health changes.
In ayurveda even though there is no direct reference about PCOS, Acharaya Charaka has described Arajasaka ,a Yonivyapada indicating Amenorrhoea. Similarly, Acharya Sushruta has mentioned Vandhya type of yonivyapada whose symptom is amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea.
 
Symptoms
Symptoms of PCOS include changes in your period (menstrual cycle). Irregular periods, that may come and go and may be very light to very heavy. PCOS can cause you to develop male-like characteristics.
Symptoms include:
  • Body hair growing on the chest, belly, face, and around the nipples
  • Decreased breast size
  • Enlargement of the clitoris
  • Thinning of the hair on the head, called male-pattern baldness
  • Voice gets deeper
You may also have skin changes:
  • Acne that gets worse
  • Dark or thick skin markings and creases around the armpits, groin, neck, and breasts
 
The following health conditions are common in women with PCOS:
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Weight gain and obesity
  • multiple or small cysts in the ovaries
 
Ayurvedic management of PCOS
 
The treatment in ayurveda for PCOS is to correct the imbalance and to maintain the normal physiological functions with proper diet and regimen. This can be done as follows,
 
  1. Purification of the body by procedures.
  2. Correcting the lifestyle
  3. Proper diet and regimen.
 
The administration of the procedures will help to eliminate the toxins collected in the body thus helps in regularizing the normal physiological functions. This will lead to bring back the normalcy to the body.
The improper lifestyle is also one of the main causative factor PCOS. The improper lifestyle leads to accumulation of toxins which play vital role in impairing the normal functions of the body.If the elimination of waste products produced in the body is not happened properly this will also impair the physiological functions leading to eruption of many health problems.
Taking the food knowing about it is very important to maintain the health of a healthy person. Proper quantity, combination and timing play vital role in treating PCOS. The diet will be planned by proper understanding ones nature.
 
Few things you can start with
  1. Regularizing the daily schedules
  2. Eating only thrice a day on time
  3. Proper exercise depending on need like yoga etc...
  4. Avoid fried foods.
  5. Avoid maida, white sugar,polished grains and its products.
  6. Caffeinated drinks
  7. Food products prepared with synthetic color and flavor
  8. Refrigerated items
  9. Animal products like chicken etc.. gown with chemicals
  10. Go for organic and natural food
  11. Home made food.
