Reply: Dear Sir,
Sella turcica is a saddle shaped area at the base of the skull where pituitary gland is situated. Normally a round pituitary image is seen in this area on imaging studies. This area may appear empty in few patients (hence the name -Empty sella syndrome)since the pituitary gland is compressed/flattened against the walls of the sella.
Empty sella syndrome may occur as a primary disorder, for which the cause is unknown (idiopathic), or as a secondary disorder, in which it occurs due to an underlying condition or disorder such as a pituitary tumor or trauma in the pituitary region.
It may give rise to varying degrees of hormonal imbalances, visual disturbances, headache, etc.
It is advisable to consult a Neurosurgeon and a neuro opthalmologist for review. In case you are also suffering from any kind of hormonal imbalance, consultation with Endocrinologist is also needed.
