This is a benign tumor arising from the Schwann cell sheath covering the vestibular or cochlear nerve and may require stereotactic radiotherapy (Gamma knife, Cyber knife, etc) or surgery for its removal. Depending on the size and location of the tumor and the symptoms, surgical approach is decided upon-it may be translabyrinthine (behind the ear) , middle fossa (above the ear), retrosigmoid (far behind the ear). Hearing loss may occur in few cases. It is a major surgery done by Neurosurgeon or ENT specialist.
