ABOUT THE DISEASE

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder. It results as part of the aging process and due to wear and tear. The cartilage in the joint area which allows bones to smoothly glide over each other gets damaged resulting in joint pain, stiffness, swelling, tenderness, decreased range of movement, etc which vary in severity in different individuals.

The symptoms usually start appearing in middle age. It may affect any joint but is most commonly seen in knees, hips, neck, lower back, etc. Factors that can be considered as risk factors include old age, obesity, sedentary life style, joint injury, congenital defect in bone or cartilage, hormonal disorders, etc. It is considered to be a progressive disease which worsens with time. Treatment would help to slow down the progression, as well as, relieve pain and improve joint movement.

Besides physical examination, the tests required include :

- Blood, Urine, Joint fluid examination.

- Imaging- X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound. TREATMENT
The treatment is directed towards reducing pain and improving the joint movements. Following options are tried alone or in combination :-

- Medications : Analgesics, NSAIDs, Cortisone injections, etc.

- Physiotherapy

- Surgery : is advised in cases who do not respond to medical therapy or where the joint is badly damaged. It can be in form of -
  1. Arthrosopic repair of torn/damaged cartilage.
  2. Osteotomy - where bone alignment is changed to relieve the stress.
  3. Joint replacement, such as Total Knee Replacement (TKR), Hip Replacement - Damaged portion of the joint bones is removed and replaced by an implant.

  4. Knee Resurfacing - is one of the newer techniques gaining popularity which is helpful in patients having arthritis in one compartment of the knee. Since only the damaged surface of the knee joint is replaced by an implant, trauma is minimized and there is faster recovery. These unique implants allow stability to the joint without any bone cut, cement or screws. Many patients when given an option, opt for it. It is being done at select centres in India.
