ABOUT THE DISEASE
Bow legs (Genu Varum) is a fairly common condition in infants and toddlers, wherein their legs bend outwards (like a bow) from the knees to the ankles. Mostly they straighten on their own by 18-24 months, however if the knees continue to stay apart even when the feet and ankles are touching a medical intervention is required.

CAUSES
- Occurs due to a curled position in the womb.
- Genetic factors. Tends to get passed from parents to kids.
- Rickets disease. which causes soft, weak bones & results from lack of calcium, phosphorus, or Vitamin D
- Blount`s disease.
- Bone dysplasia or abnormal bone development
SYMPTOMS
A wide space can be seen between the knees, when the child is standing with feet and ankles together.
The child`s toes point inward when walking.
The symptoms continue post the age of 3 years
DIAGNOSIS
- Physical examination
- X-Ray
- Blood tests to identify Calcium and vitamin D deficiency
TREATMENT METHODS
Type of treatment would vary according to the cause -
- Calcium and vitamin D supplements
- Leg braces/ Special shoes/Casts
- Surgery to correct the alignment of the bones, if condition is severe.
