ABOUT THE DISEASE

Fibrocystic breast disease, commonly called fibrocystic breasts or fibrocystic change, is a benign (noncancerous) condition in which painful lumps develop in the breasts of women, commonly in the age group of 20 to 50 yrs. It is uncommon after menopause. It does not increase the risk of breast cancer.

SYMPTOMS

• • Breast lumps that may have fluctuating size
• • Breast pain or discomfort, specially before the menstrual periods
• • Green or dark brown non bloody nipple discharge

CAUSES

The exact cause is unknown, but reproductive hormones - especially estrogen - is believed to play a role. Hormones made in the ovaries may make the breasts feel swollen, lumpy, or painful before or during menstruation each month.

DIAGNOSIS

- Physical Examination
- Mammogram
- Ultrasound
- Fine-needle aspiration cytology
- Breast biopsy

TREATMENT METHODS

If there are no or mild symptoms, no treatment is needed for fibrocystic breasts. Severe pain or large, painful cysts associated with fibrocystic breasts may require treatment. Options include:

1) Fine-needle aspiration of cyst
2) Medication like pain relievers, hormones such as birth control pills, etc.
3) Excision of lump (Lumpectomy)
