In December 2014, a baby girl was successfully born of a four-year-old frozen embryo through a surrogate mother at a private hospital in Gurgaon.

A couple from Rohtak  had stored their embryo at a  fertility centre in 2010. In this procedure, mother’s ovum is fertilized by the father’s sperm in a laboratory dish  and the embryo is stored in a liquid at extremely low temperature.Four years later, the embryo was transferred to a surrogate in Gurgaon. The baby was delivered at a Gurgaon hospital, weighed three kg and is healthy.

The couple was trying to have a baby since 2002, but the woman could not conceive due to medical complications. She tried to have a baby through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), but she had a miscarriage all the three times. She had made the last attempt in 2010. She had also stored an embryo then and four years later, the couple decided to have a child through surrogacy. It was the couple’s last opportunity to have a child with the mother’s own eggs since the woman could not produce eggs due to medical complications. Although the success rate in case of frozen embryos now is at par with fresh embryo cases, it is first such case in Gurgaon where a frozen embryo has led to a successful delivery.

The availability of potential surrogates and world-class medical infrastructure allowing use of frozen embryos, has come as a boon to numerous childless couples to have their own biological child.
