Sugary beverages cause a large number of diseases among both young and older people.

In a study at Harvard Medical School which has been published in journal Human Reproduction; it has been found that around half a litre a day of sugary cola, lemonade or other fizzy drinks cause early puberty and increases breast cancer risks in girls by 5 percent for each year they mature earlier.

Researchers claim that girls who consume higher quantities of sugary drinks including colas are expected to start menstruate much earlier than other girls of the same age who don’t use that much sugary drinks. It has long been known that high-sugar drinks prompt weight-gain and that extra weight accelerates the arrival of puberty.

Higher caffeine consumption has been associated, too, with triggering earlier periods, but the researchers found that it was the amount of sugar added to a drink, rather than the amount it naturally contained, that was the culprit, according to the research.

Drinks with added sugar ramp up insulin concentration in the body, leading to higher concentrations of sex hormones, which are normally associated with periods starting earlier, a condition that is on the rise in developed countries.

Sugared beverages are not healthy to begin with, and there should be heightened attention to avoiding them.Unlike most other predictors, sugar-sweetened beverages consumption can be modified and this research shows that it's even more important that children switch to water. The findings are important not only because of the growing problem of childhood obesity in a number of developed countries and now in India too, but also because starting periods earlier is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer later in life.
